Tell us about The Bad Girls’ Club

Three girls unite in their realisation that keeping themselves nice has got them nowhere. It’s time to take action. It’s time to rebel. It’s time to become Bad Girls.

Imogen wants to get laid but how can she be a bad girl until she loses a few kilos and gets her body into order?

Beth is happy to be a bad girl – so long as no one else finds out and so long as she is in control.

Juliette’s not really sure what she’s doing there, but it sure beats another Saturday night gaming with her geek boyfriend.

They band together to form the Bad Girls Club, a support group for recovering nice girls, and through a series of brazen dares, push the limits of their sexuality. But are the girls ready to finally take the final leap that will have them branded as bad girls for real? To save the club, and each other, they each have to publicly acknowledge their darkest secrets.

The Bad Girls’ Club – it’s about sex, it’s about dares, but most of all, it’s about friendship.

Which of your three protagonists is most like you?
I would say Imogen.  She loves food a lot.  I really identify with that.  Also she’s very indie and comes from a rock background.

What genre is it?
The Bad Girls’ Club is chick-lit with some erotica elements. There are definitely some steamy scenes but the focus is more on the three girls and the friendship that develops between them – much close to Sex and the City than Fifty Shades of Grey!

What kind of readers will it appeal to?
Definitely fans of Sex and the City, or anyone wanting to break out of their ‘nice’ girl boundaries even if it’s just in their head.

What kind of scrapes do Imogen, Beth and Juliette get into?
The one that was most fun for me to write was a scene where the three girls go to a low-rent male strip show and end up getting into a girl fight with some of the other patrons.  Imogen gets up to some internet dating with disastrous results. Juliette gets a makeover as well as having more fun than she thought at an S&M club.  Beth gets herself into an awful scrape at a work function.
The hardest/weirdest bit of research I had to do was when Beth has to buy a vibrator for a dare.  I headed to my local sex shop to research the scene and got involved with an incident when a homeless decided to do some shoplifting!  Of course, that made it into the book.

How long did it take to write?
I spent a year working solidly on it but shelved it due to issues – like a laptop meltdown and moving to Japan. Apparently my brain can’t function in Japanese and English at the same time!

What was the most challenging part of the whole process?
The Bad Girls’ Club is written from the alternating points of view of the three girls so I had to switch around in my head a lot. Sometimes I’d be – well Imogen would think like that, but how would Beth see it? The three girls are very different characters and I felt it was important that they each had a strong voice.

You say that this book is more Sex and the City than Fifty Shades of Grey; however, some of your other books are much spicier, aren’t they? Can you tell us about them?
I actually started writing erotica because I saw a competition advertised where the best dirty story won a polaroid camera.  I really wanted to win that camera and decided to enter.  And I won!  From there, I started writing erotica but I’ve found over time I’ve become less interested in the physical aspect and more so in the mental process.  I put together a collection of my short stories, Desire, where most of the five stories included are about what happens when a person, or people, have a desperate urge for sex but are in a situation where that can’t be easily fulfilled.

Tell us a bit about yourself.
I’ve had a weird and wonderful work history – I’m a computer programmer but I’ve also been a phone psychic, mystery shopper, producer and host of a television show on community television, English teacher in Japan and maker of quirky fake-fur handbags. My love for karaoke borders on obsession. I figure you don’t need to be in tune, you just need to be loud.

So what’s your karaoke song then?
I sing a lot of Japanese songs.  That gives me the justification that I’m actually going to practice my Japanese rather than just faffing off.  When it comes to English songs, I love anything by Cher.  You can really belt them out.

Have you got a blog where we can keep up with your work?
